Fold-down wall desk: how to choose (size, price, material)

Wall secretary, folding wall table, fold-away desk: what actually changes on the wall, before you buy.

Closed fold-down wall desk in oak — MURA 55 fold-away wall secretary

“Fold-down wall desk” covers three different pieces. A flap table. A wall secretary with cubbies. A fold-away wall desk: a closed cabinet, a real top that opens. Search volume is the same. Use is not.

Before price, three questions: closed depth, open load, which wall. Material — painted MDF, wood-effect film, oak blockboard — follows.

Wall desk, wall secretary, folding wall table

  • Folding wall table: a top, often a stay or legs. Little storage. Fine in a hallway.
  • Wall secretary: drop front, pigeonholes. Closed depth often 15–20 cm. Limited load.
  • Fold-away wall desk: a cabinet. Closed, a panel. Open, a real worktop, storage, often a light. That is MURA 55.

If you want a fold-down wall desk for remote work — screen, keyboard, elbows — a cabinet holds better than a secretary flap. Screws bite into solid staves, not 18 mm of MDF.

What size for a fold-away wall desk?

MURA 55 is 100 cm wide, 50 cm high and 20 cm deep. Enough for a laptop against the wall, shallow enough to leave the floor to the room.

  • Depth: 20 cm. Width 100 cm, height 50 cm.
  • Width 90–120 cm: 100 cm is the compromise (MURA 55: 100 × 50 × 20 cm).
  • Seated height: the open top around 73–76 cm off the floor, like a normal desk.

Measure clearance: door, radiator, traffic. A fold-down wall desk only saves space if it actually closes, every evening.

Fold-down wall desk prices in 2026

Entry MDF, €150–300: often flat-pack, 20–30 kg load, wood film. Mid €300–500: better mechanism, sometimes assembled. Above that: real wood, struts, assembly.

MURA 55 is €375, pair €650, oak blockboard, shipped assembled, free delivery in Europe. The price pays what a marketplace photo hides: the stave core, screws in solid wood, 75 kg load.

Material and load: what holds on a wall

Painted MDF looks clean in month one. On a wall it is heavy, holes ovalise, moisture swells edges. A fold-away desk opens a hundred times a month: the material works.

Oak blockboard has a solid-stave core. Lighter than equivalent MDF, screws that hold, a veneer you can sand. For a decorative wall secretary, MDF can pass. For a real fold-down wall desk, no.

How to fit a fold-down wall desk

Always into the solid: concrete, brick, or a stud found with a detector. Cavity plugs in plasterboard hold a frame, not 75 kg on a lever. Two people to offer the cabinet. Level. Mark. Drill. MURA 55 arrives assembled — the notice starts there.

Avoid radiators, conduits, shutter boxes. Leave the opening free: chair, knees, passage.

FAQ

Fold-down vs fold-away wall desk?
Fold-down describes the gesture. Fold-away describes the closed piece: it disappears as a panel. A wall secretary is often fold-down without being a real fold-away desk.
What budget for a good fold-down wall desk?
Under €200, expect flat-pack MDF and a light load. Around €375 you get assembled oak and struts — MURA 55.
Will a fold-down wall desk hold a monitor?
Yes if useful load is over 20 kg and the top is at least 40 cm. MURA 55 holds 75 kg, 100 × 50 × 20 cm.
